By Mike Simon - 8/23/03 If you’ve read the WindZone core book, you’ll be familiar with the fact that years are made up of seven months and months of seven weeks and weeks of seven days. This comes to a total of 49 days in a month and 343 days in the year. Before I get too far into this, I’m going to tell you that that the names, holidays and terms I’m giving you are from the campaign I’m running and that you can use any names you want for your campaign. In fact, you can choose to use whatever calendar you want, but let me tell you why things are the way they are in the book, and then I’ll expand from there. One of the things we tackled in the book was that without real seasons created by orbiting around a sun (there is no sun, obviously), there would have to be some reason and way of delimiting time. We decided on the rather arbitrary number of sentient “blessed” races. This blessing, we perceived, would be based on the view from whomever creating the calendar which probably was a bi-pedal humanoid with flesh, bones and blood (as those are the player races in the game). After that, we decided that following that logic that an entire calendar made from that perspective would be based on the number seven. Seven days, seven weeks, seven months, seven years, and so on. As it turned out, for comfort’s sake it worked out well. 343 days is not far off from 365. With those reasons in mind, I took it upon myself to create some more details for my campaign so that when characters happened upon calendars, they’d have no trouble figuring out when some event was going to occur. The following is what I came up with: Days of the Week: Honday – The first day of the week, named for Hyons Londay – Named for Lowons Windsday – Considered a somewhat holyday by observers, named for the Wind Chirsday – Named for Chiropterans Felinday – Named for Felinoids Aversday – Named for Avians Stormday – Named for Darkons, also called the Storm Gamin are not represented because they chose to create their own calendar, which was not adopted by the general populace. I chose to, based on Japanese philosophy, not name the months. Citizens of New Trimidel (in my campaign) refer to months by number. As such, someone talking about the sixth Windsday of the third month would refer to it as the sixth Windsday of the Third. Dates are expressed as the day and then the month. Someone talking about the 37th of next month might say “the 37th of the Sixth”. Years I decided would begin 5225 years ago when the foundation of New Trimidel was created (then called Trimidel). Written down, the full date (as is done in most of Europe and the rest of the world) is written dd/mm/yyyy or, using the example above, 37/6/5225. After deciding to start time based on the campaign setting’s largest city’s inception, some holidays emerged that I thought might be interesting. Once again, feel free to change, add or remove these for your own purposes. 01/1 – Founder’s Day Presents are given
and parties are had to celebrate the day the founders of Trimidel gave the
citizens the place in which they live.
(An interesting note: Many other
cities also celebrate the first of the first as Founder’s day, even though it
has no real meaning to them.) 41/1 – Accord’s day A holiday that began
as a remembrance of the day when the Hyons and Darkons made peace is now
celebrated with images of a large white cloud with eyes throwing lightning bolt
shaped chocolates to children. 17/2 – Feather’s day An Avian/Chiropteran
holiday where cocoon and bird shaped pastries are made of gingerbread (or other
pastries) in celebration of the life bond the two races share. 48/2 – New Trimidel’s day A holiday
commemorating the ground breaking on rebuilding the old city of Trimidel after
Windless onslaughts burnt the city almost completely to the ground. 14/3 – Stonewing A Gamin holiday
celebrating the Shale, who made unlikely allies in a battle against Windemon
enslavement. Small, smooth stones are
placed under the pillow that night and are considered good luck. 32/3 – Queen’s day A Hyon holiday
celebrating the ascension of the Hyon queen to complete connection to the Wind
which is general spent in quiet contemplation of the Wind. This holiday is sometimes observed by
non-hyons simply as a day to commune with the Wind, but not necessarily in
celebration of the Hyon Queen. 37/3 – Game day A Felinoid holiday
where sporting and combat challenges are made in all day events. This holiday is celebrated by other races,
but most simply attend large arena events where Felinoid athletes and warriors
participate in events. 26/4 – Wing day An Avian holiday
celebrating their lifebirds. Wingday is
primarily celebrated by Avian children as a bonding exercise for them and their
lifebirds. For older Avians, it’s a day
to renew the bond and show appreciation to a life partner. For everyone else, it’s a day to eat cookies
shaped like birds or nests. 39/4 – Path day Primarily a Lowon
holiday celebrating the joy of connection to both Wind and Ground, this holiday
is spent living in the “Wild” when possible, or planting a tree or plant in the
city. 10/5 – Sky day A holiday celebrated
mostly by Lowons, but acknowledged by the other races as the first time Lowon’s
flew an aircraft successfully. 31/5 – Frontier’s day A celebration of the
ever-expanding land march of New Trimidel.
Originally children dressed up as adventurers on the frontier, but
trends changed over the years and now children dress up as adventurers,
monsters of legend and popular figures from history and pop culture. 6/6 – Windless day A day to remember
all of those who have been lost into the ranks of the Windless and a time to
rededicate the will of the people to ridding the scourge of Windless from all
of the reaches of the city of New Trimidel.
Families and friends of those who have been lost light candles for their
loved ones. 12/7 – Artisan's day An Avian holiday celebrating the arts. Most Avian communities in New Trimidel import or invite artists for a spectacle lasting most of the day. This holiday has turned into a long weekend (moving into the 13th and 14th) as more artist, singers, dancers, poets and others flood into the city to join like minded and talented individuals. 24/7 – Commerce day What started out as
a Chiropteran tradition of patronizing other family’s businesses became one of
the largest holidays of the year for all races in New Trimidel. This day, everyone floods the markets and
malls buying gifts for their family and friends. 25/7 – Delivery Day The second half of
Commerce day, where all of the orders are delivered from Commerce Day, is
celebrated by welcoming in the delivery person into the home and showering him
with small gifts. This day is also a
day when families and friends get together to enjoy the company of one another. 49/7 – Founder’s Eve The party starts
early for Founder’s day. |
